One component of the $31.5 million-redevelopment plan along Memorial Drive known as The Landscape of Memory, is the opening of Poppy Plaza scheduled for June 8.
Located at 1111 Memorial Drive NW, Poppy Plaza aligns with the vision of Memorial Drive focusing on themes of remembrance, legacy and history.
“The themes of remembrance, legacy and history are found throughout the Memorial Drive redevelopment,” said Ward 7 Alderman Druh Farrell. “We are pleased with how the entire vision is coming together and providing important public spaces for Calgarians to enjoy.”
Poppy Plaza is phase two of The Landscape of Memory, which commemorates citizens who have served to protect our freedom and security. Phase one of the redevelopment included The Calgary Soldiers Memorial unveiled in April 2011.
“We are truly pleased to honour those who made great sacrifices for our country through their contribution to Canada’s armed forces,” said Mayor Naheed Nenshi. “Poppy Plaza is where Calgarians can gather to respect and memorialize Canada’s efforts during wartime in a beautiful public gathering space that helps to connect people with the river’s edge.”
