Crossfield open house parade collects food donations for veterans in need

REALTORS® in Crossfield will be holding open houses with a twist this Saturday.

Aiming to help fill food hampers for veterans, several area Realtors are encouraging prospective homebuyers to bring along a non-perishable food item when they visit the town's Parade of Open Houses this weekend.

"I heard there was a big need for food this year," said Christine Giberson, one of the Realtors behind the event. "We wanted to do something in Crossfield, and that morphed into 'Why don't we do a food drive?' "

The event is being undertaken in support of the Veterans Helping Veterans Hamper Program, which assists those who've served their country by providing much-needed groceries, toiletries and other household items, along with financial assistance.

The program, which is run by veterans, normally gives out around 40 hampers a month, but with the holiday season approaching, that number is expected to climb as high as 200.

"We're at that time of year where we just need everything," said Marie Blackburn with the Veterans Association Food Bank. "Our food supply from handing out hampers all year long is fairly low and we need to make sure our funds are always in place so that we can continue running our programs."
