Bedecking Your Yard

The Calgary Home + Garden Show features hundreds of exhibitors showcasing products and tips for anything and everything pertaining to home improvement and enhancement.

One local company launching at the show — looking to both improve upon and enhance local backyards — is SigmaDek. Incorporated since 2008, SigmaDek offers low maintenance and lifetime warranty deck and patio products. Working in the building supply industry for almost 20 years, SigmaDek CEO Tory Weber noticed how every structural component on a home was covered, whether it be with shingles, drywall and the like, yet a home's deck is bare wood.

"It didn't make sense that a structural component like a deck had all this exposed wood and there's be an opportunity if someone ... designed a non-wood solution that was easy to put together," he said. "Wood rots and decks fall off houses and railings break so we set out to create a system that clicked and snapped together that really made it easy, it's kind of like Lego for grownups."

Weber spent five years researching and developing SigmaDek, including hundreds of pieces of tooling that had to be made around the world, and rigorous tests to be sure the product exceeded the building code by 2.5 times. The end result is a product made out of die-cast and extruded aluminum that is fireproof and will never rot or crack.

A durable deck product is welcome in a Calgary market where the locals make good use of their decks and backyards – weather permitting – where the weather can be summer one day and winter the next. Weber feels Calgarians are very in the know when it comes to new products making the city a good place to launch SigmaDek.

"I think Calgary is just really open for business and I think we're very progressive in terms of technology," he said. "We are just so pleased to launch in Calgary."

SigmaDek is featuring a large booth at the Home + Garden Show, including a deck with an acrylic floor so attendees can look through to see all components and installers on hand to take appointments to give quotes. Installers contract with the company and are certified and trained on installing the system.

Backyard enthusiasts can also be on the lookout for SigmaDek's Patio-In-A-Box product, which will be available through Costco in the summer.
