Community Profile: Willow Park

Fifteen years ago, Kari Strutt and her husband, Ken Bagan, came across the southeast community of Willow Park while on a weekend shopping excursion to Southcentre Mall.

“We headed home by way of Willingdon Boulevard and there was a rather homely house for sale,” said Strutt. “It was a stucco affair with a partial flat roof, but at 1,300 square feet it felt palatial and affordable. So we bought it.”

Calgary region has rich history and bright future on film

You’re watching a movie or TV show when something catches your eye.

“I know that place!” you exclaim, as a character enters a pizza place on a city street, or rides a horse through a wheat field with a majestic mountain backdrop.

Calgary and its surrounding areas are becoming increasingly popular as filming locations for major movie and television productions – making famous places that Calgarians know well.

“We have 100 years of history here,” said Luke Azevedo, Calgary film commissioner and CEO of the Calgary Film Centre. “We’re one of the oldest locations outside of Hollywood for production.”

Growing closer

Community gardens bring neighbourhood residents together

When Lynn MacCallum helped out with the Cliff Bungalow Community Garden during its construction in 2014, it was with a view towards having some garden space of her own.

“We are in a condo, and like many people in the neighbourhood, we didn’t have access to growing food in our own gardens,” said MacCallum. “I think a lot of people in the garden live in an apartment, so other than growing a couple of herbs in a pot on a balcony, there wasn’t much opportunity.

“Growing food was foremost, but what has happened is this community that has been created, which is pretty awesome.”

Luxury sales numbers rebound; experts point to demand’s impact on pricing

Calgary’s luxury resale housing market bucked the trend in 2016, posting modest improvements in sales volumes throughout the year and recovering somewhat from the significant decline experienced in 2015.

Yet industry observers urge caution at interpreting this past year’s numbers at face value, saying a return to long-term averages is still far away.
