Donation a win for local society

Calgary Home + Garden Show and Revolve Furnishings give $5,000 to Women in Need Society

Two Calgary groups have banded together to make a donation to a Calgary society in the practice of giving back to those who need it most.

After Calgary's Women in Need Society (WINS) retail stores saw three separate robberies in December, the Calgary Home + Garden Show and Revolve Furnishings took the initiative of making a $5,000 donation.

"While we recover, we desperately need to rebuild our inventory to ensure that our programs are not negatively impacted by these incidents," said Yvette Rasmussen, communications and development with WINS. "This incredible gift will put smiles on the faces of everyone — staff and families alike — as we work towards our goal of recovery."

WINS said the gift will be a welcome boost for the organization, which annually issues more than $600,000 in vouchers for free clothing, household items and furniture to women and their families transitioning out of homelessness, fleeing domestic violence, acclimating to Canada or trying to break the cycle of poverty.

"Our partnership with Revolve Furnishings at this year's Calgary Home + Garden Show includes a charitable component, which allowed us to donate a $5,000 makeover to a deserving non-profit organization," said Teri Salazar, show manager for Marketplace Events, producers of the show. "Once we heard the news about the break-ins, we knew WINS was our charity of choice."

The donation will go toward a makeover for the common areas at WINS Southeast Family Resource Centre. The centres act as critical hubs of services connecting families to support programs to help them strengthen resilience and focus on building a better life. The made-over spaces will see the addition of new furniture from Revolve, hand-picked to suit the specific rooms and their purpose.

"People's surroundings directly impact their lives, and a beautiful positive space can go a long way in lending inspiration, enjoyment and fun to its inhabitants," said Jeff Stoner, managing partner at Revolve Furnishings.
"We're so excited to be giving back to WINS and creating just that kind of experience for its beneficiaries."

The Calgary Home + Garden Show hits Calgary Feb. 26 to March 1 and includes celebrity guests such as Carson Arthur of HGTV Canada's Critical Listing, lifestyle expert Janette Ewen and local interior designer Heather Draper of The Heather Company.
