5 Things: Home + Garden Show

Running Feb. 26 to March 1, the Calgary Home + Garden Show celebrates 34 years of home improvement and design in the city.

More than 650 exhibitors are expected to be on hand for the four-day event, joining industry experts such as HGTV's Carson Arthur and Janette Ewen and Jef Hancock of Parker Barrow.

Here's five things you won't want to miss at the show: 1. Home + Garden Stage

Located in the Archie Boyce Theatre outside of Hall A, the Home + Garden Stage allows visitors to interact and get inspired by some of the biggest names in home and design. This year's celebrity presenters include landscape designer and HGTV personality Carson Arthur, Cardel Renos Sales and Design consultants Marie-Claire Williams and Clare Gardner and local interior designer Heather Draper. The stage is designed by Draper's company, The Heather Company.

2. Home Tweet Home

The imaginations of young beneficiaries from Calgary's Ronald McDonald House are taking flight at the show this year with the Home Tweet Home project. Young people were invited to design their dream house, which, in turn, acted as inspiration for several birdhouses transformed by Calgary's top media personalities, designers and tastemakers including Dallas Flexhaug of Global Calgary, Ricky Zayshley of Avenue Magazine, Sue Deyell of KISS 95.9 FM and the editorial staff of CREB®Now. The birdhouses are up for bidding in a silent auction through the duration of the show with all proceeds benefitting Ronald McDonald House of Southern Alberta.

3. Revolve Home

Calgary's Revolve Furnishings has put together a 1,000-square-foot home with everything from kitchen built-ins and custom cabinets to the latest in modern furniture, accessories and lighting design. Revolve recently partnered with the show to make a $5,000 donation to Calgary's Women In Need Society (WINS). The proceeds will go toward a makeover of the common areas at WINS Southeast Family Resource Centre after the society experienced three robberies in December.

4. Do-it-yourself Gardens

As spring approaches so does the gardening season. The team at Dafoe Design will be covering the creative process of tailoring a garden of your own, whether it be with herbs, vegetables, fruits, flowers or all of the above.

5. Terrarium and Miniature Garden Workshops

Speaking of gardening, before spring gets here, why not start planting a little greenery indoors? The folks at Blue Grass Garden Centre will be demonstrating how to build indoor gardens with compatible plants and materials from start
to finish.
